Restaurants, grocers react to salmonella threat, stop selling tomatoes

Tomato-haters rejoice. Many Valley restaurants have stopped serving tomatoes and tomato-based products as a result of a nationwide salmonella outbreak.

At least one El Pollo Loco location in the West Valley has stopped serving salsa because it is made fresh daily from a variety of tomatoes.

Some Subway restaurants across the Valley as well as national restaurant firms and grocers including McDonald's, Taco Bell and Burger King and Wal-Mart have stopped serving some types of raw tomatoes, while other retailers have pulled all tomatoes as a precaution.

Federal health officials are still investigating the cause of the salmonella outbreak, that seems to be affecting tomatoes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned people to avoid raw red Roma, raw red plum, raw red round tomatoes and products that contain them.

Raw cherry tomatoes, raw grape tomatoes and raw tomatoes on the vine don't seem to be affected by the outbreak. Similarly, home-grown tomatoes also seem not to be affected.

First reported earlier this month and traced back to April, the outbreak has affected at least 17 states, including Arizona.

There have been more than 167 reported cases so far and at least 23 hospitalizations from the salmonella nationwide.

Arizona Department of Health Services spokesman Michael Murphy said there have been 14 confirmed cases in Arizona and one hospitalization.

In addition to four cases in Maricopa County, there are four reported cases in both Apache and Navajo counties, and one each in Coconino and Pima counties. In addition, three cases resulted from infection in the state but are not affiliated with any one county. So far, the illness has not proved fatal, Murphy said.
