McDonald's sandwiches will be tomatoes-free following the salmonella outbreak in the U.S. having as source uncooked tomatoes, the fast-food giant said on Monday.
Company officials said the movement comes as a precaution until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention locate the source of the infection
Tomatoes consumption has been linked with 145 cases of salmonellosis in 16 states across the U.S. since mid-April, 23 of them needing hospitalization. Texas and New Mexico lead in the number of Salmonella infections among the affected states. Salmonellosis has not made any victim yet. However, the FDA issued a tomato warning on Monday informing people on the risk they expose if eating red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes, which are believed to be the source of infection.
Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine attached and tomatoes grown at home are safe, federal officials said.
Following the FDA's warning, Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald's stopped serving sliced tomatoes in its premium chicken sandwiches and the Big N' Tasty burger to ensure customers are not exposed to any risk coming from its food.
McDonald's decision has also been embraced by other fast-food giants like competitor Burger King, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Taco Bell, which have already announced they will exclude tomatoes from their sandwiches. And the list of restaurants and grocery stores which have decided to pull tomatoes from their menus and shelves could go on with other well-known names in the field like Wal-Mart, Safeway, Wegmans, Ralphs, and so on.
